Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina formally opens vaccination campaign

Prime minister Sheikh Hasina formally inaugurated the country’s biggest-ever vaccination campaign on 26th January,2014. This campaign will take place up to 13th February. About 5.20 crore children starting from 9 months old to the age of 15, will be given measles-rubella vaccine.

‘We are determined to eliminate measles and control rubella as well as to lower child and maternal mortality rate substantially to face the challenges of the 21st century,’ she told at the inaugural function of the measles-rubella vaccination campaign at Ganabhaban. She also said that the government is working ceaselessly keeping ahead the goals of rooting out measles, controlling rubella and to bring down the infant and maternal mortality rate substantially. She hoped that with the sincere efforts of all, the rate of measles and rubella immunization can be increased up to 95 percent by 2016.

At the function, the prime minister encouraged the children in taking vaccines by patting and taking them on her lap. A kid named Sanjida didn’t want to get off but Prime Minister worked gracefully keeping Sanjida on her lap. Sanjida also spoke with PM during the end of the speech- “You all please take vaccine. There is nothing to fear.We all will be healthy and happy.” Among others, Health Minister Mohammad Nasim, Health Secretary MN Neazuddin, Director General of Health Khandakar Sifayetullah and representatives from donor organizations were present on the occasion. To cheer up the children, characters from Sisimpur came in the ceremony.
